A Whole Day Thinking About Climate Urgencies

Description

Hotel Europa’s idea for TODOS’23: spend a whole day together thinking about the climate, in an event conceived by artists and activists, in which we will think about climate change and its effects on our lives, through theatre, dance, music – and also, of course, by thinking together about mobility, food, water, forests, waste and climate activism. At the end of the day there will be a concert by a band made up of musicians who have collaborated with the company over the years!

Workshop programme with prior registration.

◔ 9.30am – 11.30am

Documentary Theatre and Climate Urgency

André Amálio and Tereza Havlíčková – Hotel Europa

M/14

In this workshop, the theatre company Hotel Europa will use its working methods and documentary theatre to reflect on climate change. A workshop that mixes theatre, movement and the stories of activists fighting climate change.

Participants should bring light and comfortable clothing.

◔ 11.30am – 1pm

Vegan food

Ricardo Cruz

7€ – (includes lunch 13h-14h)

M/18 (or M/16 if accompanied by a designated adult)

In this session participants will prepare their own meal, using the concepts of sustainability and vegan food for a balanced diet that takes climate change into account.

Participants should bring a knife, cutting board, bowl, notepad and a kitchen apron.

◔2pm – 3:30pm

Building instruments from waste materials

Mbalango

M/8 (if accompanied by a designated adult)

With this workshop, Mbalango proposes to explore with the participants a process of transforming objects considered obsolete or even ” waste ” into melodic and functional instruments. During the workshop we will learn how to build a double bass from a wash bowl, a broomstick and a string. Starting the workshop with a short introduction to the various functions that the bowl, stick and string will fulfil, we will then each build our own double bass and end with a jam-session playing the double basses together.

◔3pm – 6pm

Guerrilla Gardening: how to build edible gardens in the city

Leonardo Rodrigues

M/8 (if accompanied by a responsible adult)

[FULL]

In this workshop, which is also intended to be a debate, we will pose the following question through Guerrilla Gardening: does public space really belong to everyone? Revisiting the basics of gardening, we will reflect on this practice in cities as a political tool, a mechanism for combating climate change and mitigating social inequalities. Finally, a small edible forest will be planted next to the Ameixoeira Cultural Centre, in order to make this action permanent – activating public space to serve the community.

Participants should bring fresh, comfortable clothing, a hat and, if available, gardening gloves.

Free entry presentations/talks (limited capacity).

◔ 14h

Climate Activism

Andreia Galvão

Climate activism has become increasingly prominent over time, gaining significant momentum after the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2016. Youth activism and involvement has played an important role in the evolution of the movement following the growth of the Fridays For Future strikes initiated by Greta Thunberg in 2019.

◔ 16h30

What climate challenges is Portugal facing? This is the topic of the conversation with climate activist Andreia Galvão.
